本书是第一部中国近代社会生活通史著作，从社会文化史视角，较全面、系统地描述了1840年至1949年中国社会生活变迁的历史过程及全景画面。自鸦片战争后开口通商至新中国成立一百余年间，中国社会发生了剧烈变动，社会生活作为人们一切活动的基础，与政治、经济、文化各方面变动互动交织，共同构成了中国社会近代转型的历史洪流。伴随着各个时期社会的变动，以城市为主导、居于社会生活变动前沿地带的广大民众，在衣食住行等物质生活，社会交往及风俗习尚、休闲娱乐等文化生活都发生了巨大变化，中国民众的生活由城乡一体的传统农业生活方式，转向以城市为主导、城乡二元化的近代城市化及商业化生活方式。社会生活既是社会制度变革的基础和土壤，又与社会制度变革互相促进，同时社会生活变动又成为人们思想观念变革的社会基础。社会生活既与我们每个人的日常生活相关，也与国家社会的变革与进步相连。

This book is the first general history of modern Chinese social life, which comprehensively and systematically describes the historical process and panorama of the changes in China's social life from 1840 to 1949 from the perspective of social and cultural history. From the opening of trade after the Opium War to the founding of New China for more than 100 years, Chinese society has undergone drastic changes, and social life, as the basis of all people's activities, is intertwined with political, economic and cultural changes, which together constitute the historical torrent of modern transformation of Chinese society. With the changes in society in various periods, the vast number of people who are dominated by cities and occupy the forefront of changes in social life have undergone tremendous changes in material life such as clothing, food, housing and transportation, social exchanges and customs, leisure and entertainment, etc., and the life of Chinese people has changed from the traditional agricultural lifestyle integrating urban and rural areas to the modern urbanization and commercial lifestyle dominated by the city and the dualization of urban and rural areas. Social life is not only the foundation and soil for the reform of the social system, but also promotes the change of the social system, and the change of social life has become the social foundation for the change of people's ideas and concepts.
