本书以作者自己的学术回顾为主，分为“上编”和“下编”：“上编”为其学术生涯的自我反思及总结，题为“路难心静”；“下编”则以“会通”来搜集相关“学友文序”，分为两个部分，一为作者在各种学术场合的致辞或发言，二为作者给学界同仁所写的序言或相关文集的前言。书后“附录”部分包括作者学术简介及其出版的著作和发表的文章目录。
