In the first half of the 20th century, a huge rural construction project led by intellectuals arose in China, which the academic community called the "rural construction movement". As a reformist experiment, it hopes to use non-violent methods to save the weakening rural economy, refresh Chinese politics, revive Chinese culture, and realize "national reconstruction" or "national self-help" through measures such as education, cooperation, local autonomy, public services, and changing customs under the premise of maintaining the existing social system.
