本书以滇桂地区和中南半岛北部为重点空间，从区域整体史的角度，分四个时段对19世纪中叶以前中国西南与中南半岛古代民族源流、分布及其演变进行纵向勾勒和横向比较，既考虑中国西南与中南半岛民族古代史的区域差异，又重视其整体性特征及不同地区之间的联系与交流，在研究中充分考虑文明起源和古代王朝或地方政权民族政策对民族源流与分布的影响，在孟高棉民族的起源及其迁徙与交融、土司制度的发展及其对民族分布的影响、主体民族的崛起与中南半岛民族分布的演变等领域取得重要进展。
From the perspective of regional overall history, this book summarizes and horizontally compares the origins, distribution and evolution of ancient ethnic groups in southwest China and Indochina Peninsula before the mid-19th century in four periods, considering the regional differences in the ancient history of ethnic groups in southwest China and the Indochina Peninsula, and paying attention to their overall characteristics and the connections and exchanges between different regions, and fully considering the origin of civilization and the influence of the ethnic policies of ancient dynasties or local regimes on the origin and distribution of ethnic groups in the research. Important progress has been made in the fields of the origin of the Mon-Khmer ethnic group and its migration and integration, the development of the Tusi system and its impact on ethnic distribution, the rise of the main ethnic groups and the evolution of ethnic distribution in the Indochina Peninsula.（AI翻译）
