国家想象研究一度是中国现代文学研究的焦点，但尚有开拓和掘进的空间。抗战和内战的特殊语境滋生了新的文学思想和表达，也影响着此后的文学转折，四十年代庶几堪称现代文学国家想象的最重要阶段。本书将文学置于具体的历史情境考察，运用各类文献，以文史瓦证的方法，讨沦不同知识群体对新中国的认知与构想，细究文学与政治的内在联系，从而揭橥现代文学及知识分子传统的繁复面貌。
