当下中国乡村社会正处于传统与现代的历史转换期，在探索乡村治理转型道路的过程中，注重传统的“延续性”与注重超越传统的“创新性”同样重要。本书将研究视角投向历史的深处，选取中国家户制为切入点，以印度村社制为参照，运用历史制度主义的理论范式和方法论，分析两种东方制度传统的生成、历史变迁及其在变迁过程中对乡村治理原型的形塑以及对乡村治理转型的推动；并通过比较发现中国乡村治理的历史底色和制度基因，厘清中国乡村治理变迁的历史脉络，探究中国乡村治理未来转型的路径选择，使中国乡村治理的现代化能够步入“链式”发展轨道。
At present, China's rural society is in a period of historical transformation between tradition and modernity, and in the process of exploring the transformation of rural governance, it is equally important to pay attention to the "continuity" of tradition as to pay attention to "innovation" beyond tradition. This book takes the Chinese household system as the starting point, takes the Indian village system as a reference, and uses the theoretical paradigm and methodology of historical institutionalism to analyze the formation and historical changes of two Eastern institutional traditions, and their shaping of rural governance prototypes and the promotion of rural governance transformation in the process of change.
