本书基于区域经济学和历史地理学相融合的研究视角，以近代以来南运河航运的发展演变为线索，探讨在新旧交通工具变革中南运河航运的作用和地位。新旧交通工具具有各自的优势与不足，它们之间既有竞争也有合作，沿岸地区运输网络呈现出多样化、多层次的特征。内河漕运停止后，南运河航运并未迅速衰落，它不仅促进了沿岸地区农业、工矿业、手工业、商业的发展，而且还加快了沿岸城镇经济的发展和近代化的步伐。但随着南运河的衰落和区域经济中心的转移，沿岸地区经济日趋衰落。本书全面勾勒了南运河沿岸区域社会经济的兴衰史，可以帮助我们更加全面地认识大运河航运的兴衰，亦有助于我们理解交通在区域经济发展中的重要地位。
Based on the research perspective of the integration of regional economics and historical geography, this book takes the development and evolution of South Canal shipping in modern times as a clue, and discusses the role and status of South Canal shipping in the transformation of new and old means of transportation. New and old means of transportation have their own advantages and disadvantages, and there is both competition and cooperation between them, and the transportation network in coastal areas presents diversified and multi-level characteristics. After the cessation of inland water transportation, the South Canal shipping did not decline rapidly, which not only promoted the development of agriculture, industry and mining, handicrafts and commerce in the coastal areas, but also accelerated the pace of economic development and modernization of coastal towns. However, with the decline of the South Canal and the shift of regional economic centers, the economy of the coastal areas is declining.
